Coldplay, it seems, like to spring surprises.
The band have made no secret of their plans to get back into the studio, eager to try something new.
Yesterday (February 25th) the group's social networks pointed to renewed activity. Tweeting that "something new" would happen, the announcement was timed for midnight in the time zone local to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
Well, now we know. Coldplay have placed icy new track 'Midnight' online, with Mercury nominee Jon Hopkins on production duty.
It's a left field departure for the band, with Hopkins placing some sub-zero electronics beneath Chris Martin's vocoder'd voice.
With its swooping high notes, fans have already compared the track to Sigur Ros, while there are shades of Bon Iver's second album in the way the frontman's delivery is treated.
