Led Zeppelin Singer Search

John Paul Jones has admitted that Led Zeppelin's search to find a new singer "fell by the wayside".

Led Zeppelin boasted one of the most iconic frontmen in the history of rock music. Robert Plant's golden locks and wailing vocals became the blueprint for rock singers as the band he fronted conquered the globe.

Now working on his own, the singer won a Grammy recently with Alison Krauss for their latest album. Happy pursuing his own path, Robert Plant turned down the chance to front the re-united Led Zeppelin.

Which put the remaining trio in a quandary. In a new interview bass player John Paul Jones admits that the band did attempt to find a new singer.

"Jimmy and I rehearsed a bit with (drummer) Jason Bonham and we couldn't really agree on singers and that fell by the wayside," he told BBC 6 Music. "Then this (Them Crooked Vultures) came along and, to be honest, I'm really happy."

Them Crooked Vultures of course feature Dave Grohl on drums, a man who was once rumoured to be joining a re-united Led Zeppelin. The hard rock veterans chose Jason Bonham - son of original drummer John - but the bass player admits he has been impressed by the former Nirvana man.

"I immediately recognised that this was a drummer that was a) really good, b) groovy and c) listened. All those nice things that bass players like in drummers," he told BBC 6Music.

The band's debut single 'New Fang' is due to be released next month. "I think the first thing we started working on was New Fang."

"He said, ‘I’ve got these chords’, so we thought ‘Let’s have a bash at that’, and we just worked it up into the song that you hear now."

Them Crooked Vultures are set to release their debut album on November 17th.
