LCD Soundsystem On Finishing

James Murphy talks fear of success

LCD Soundsystem producer James Murphy has spoken to ClashMusic about why he feels their new album should be their last.

LCD Soundsystem burst out of New York almost a decade ago with their debut single 'Losing My Edge' a slice of disco-punk that sounded effortlessly thrilling.

Fast forward ten years and the group are preparing to release their third, and possibly last, album. 'This Is Happening' is set to break over the summer, and with lead single 'Drunk Girls' gaining high profile radio play could become a huge success.

However speaking exclusively to ClashMusic, James Murphy reveals that he actually fears attaining that level of success. "In theory I’d love to have a successful song and a hit but I don’t know what it would do to my life" he explained.

"I like my life I’m very excited about my life" the producer continued. "I have access, which is something I never had I was always a completely outside person. Remarkably there’s been some success it’s just mind boggling."

"But I don’t know if I’d like to be a famous person. I like having some access. I like being known and respected in my field which is always hard to explain. Like: ‘Are you famous? No. But I’m respected in my field of musicians!’"

The possibility of breaking into the mainstream is something which has dogged LCD Soundsystem throughout their career. 'Sound Of Silver' was critically acclaimed, while lead single 'North American Scum' was a dancefloor smash.

"I work best being ambitious and being argumentative... You know, I don’t like people telling us that we can’t be big because we’re for hipsters or you know, people are dumb. I think people are smart."

"I think audiences are capable of liking things that aren’t what record executives think will be the only things they like. And I think it’s actually the radio being and the label people that are stupid or insulting. They can be very condescending to an audience. Thinking that, ‘of course I like this music but they won’t get it’. And I’ve always fought against that."
