Julian Casablancas On Solo Album
Title taken from Oscar Wilde
Strokes singer Julian Casablancas has spoken about the making of his eagerly awaited solo album 'Phrazes For The Young'.
One of the definitive rock frontmen of the past decade, Julian Casablancas' doe-eyed charm and lazy drawl turned him into an icon and New Yorkers The Strokes into an instant indie rock success story.
Now preparing to release his first solo album, 'Phrazes For The Young' is Casablancas' first full length effort since 2005.
Taking its name from an Oscar Wilde essay the album's release date has been pushed back to November 2nd.
In a new interview Julian Casablancas reveals that he was consciously trying to experiment on the new album. "A lot of the music on the album has a lot of different rhythms going on – I'd collected a bunch of drum beats," he said.
"It's tricky, because you can fall into Phil Collins territory pretty easily. Not that he's bad. But yeah, I was into that complex percussion thing. I'm still trying to figure it out — there are so many ways you can go bad."
Speaking to GQ, Julian Casablancas revealed that he wasn't initially keen on making a record by himself.
"For a long time I didn't want to do a solo thing, but there comes a point where everyone else is going outside of The Strokes and The Strokes' filtering process. And, as I was writing, some stuff felt like Strokes stuff and some felt like, 'I just want to do this however the hell I want to do it.' I don't want to say it was an experiment, but it is nice to build things from the ground up."
Julian Casablancas is set to release his new album 'Phrazes For The Young' on November 2nd.
