Joe Strummer Memorial Show
New fundraiser announced
A new tribute to iconic punk frontman Joe Strummer is set to take place, with all profits going to the Jail Guitar Doors charity.
Born plain John Mellor, Joe Strummer's wandering spirit and instinctive humanity lit up the nascent punk scene. Abandoning pub rock legends The 101ers Joe Strummer took up vocal duties with The Clash, and his energetic stage performances helped fuel arguably one of the greatest live acts of all time.
After The Clash split Strummer went through years of wandering, before re-emerging in the late 90s with The Mescaleros. With that group finally receiving the success they deserved, Joe Strummer died suddenly in 2002.
Since then he has been memorialised in many ways. There is a 'Strummerland' forest on the Scottish island of Skye, while many groups have written songs in his honour.
The forthcoming tribute night is named Night Of Treason, and features a variety of performers trying to recapture the spirit of Joe Strummer. Special guests will be announced closer to the night and the punky/reggae sound system Radio Clash will be looking after the decks.
Also on the night is a very special showing of the documentary 'The Last Night London Burned'. Shortly before his death Joe Strummer played a benefit show for striking firefighters, and was joined by Clash cohort Mick Jones for an encore that has gone down rock history.
All profits from the event will go to Jail Guitar Doors, a charity who aim to give prisoners musical instruments and take their name from a Joe Strummer song.
Organiser Geoff Martin said "no one should ever underestimate the lasting legacy of Joe Strummer and the Clash. Joe’s spirit, energy and love of humanity is as relevant today as it ever was and that’s why we keep the flame burning bright. We expect this south London tribute night to become an annual event."
Night Of Treason takes place on the following date:
