British musicians sign open letter

Several high profile British musicians have signed an open letter in protest at the treatment of Pussy Riot.
Currently awaiting trial in Russia, Pussy Riot have become something of a cause celebre. Several iconic musicians have rushed to their cause, with Kathleen Hanna recently posting a righteous salute to the group on YouTube.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is to visit the UK this week, soaking up the Olympic Games in London. To let their feelings be known, a number of high profile British artists have signed an open letter protesting the treatment of Pussy Riot.
Printed in today's (August 2nd) edition of The Times, the letter is supported by Johnny Marr, Jarvis Cocker, Pet Shop Boys' singer Neil Tennant and more.

"Dissent is a right in any democracy and it is entirely disproportionate that they face seven years in jail for what we consider a preposterous charge of 'hooliganism motivated by religious hatred'."
"We are especially concerned about recent reports that food is being withheld from them and that they have appeared in court in a cage."
"We believe firmly that it is the role of the artist to make legitimate political protest and fight for freedom of speech."
