Jack Penate On New Album

Singer used Smiths as inspiration

Returning songwriter Jack Penate has revealed that he turned to The Smiths for inspiration on his new album 'Everything Is New'.

Jack Penate arrived with a barrel-load of hype. After years slogging it out on the London open mic scene he seemed to offer something different, a cool and clear depiction of what it was like to be young in Britain today.

With the media lauding him as a new messiah, debut album 'Matinee' could never match expectations. Buried beneath failed promise, the record actually has its fair share of triumphant pop songs.

Stung by criticism, Jack Penate retreated to his rehearsal room to work on new material. Attempting to get back to his roots, he looked to the music that first inspired him to pick up a guitar and begin writing.

In a new interview Jack Penate reveals that listening to The Smiths song 'Accept Yourself' helped him deal with his old attitude.

"I'll either wake up and think everything's going to be great and this record will work or I'll be thinking, 'That's it. It's over. What's the point?'," Penate said of his inability to "stay on an even keel".

Originally released in 1983, 'Accept Yourself' was later collected on the album 'Hatful Of Hollow'. One of the band's most loved songs, it featured Morrissey intoning 'When will you accept yourself?'.

Perhaps this atmosphere of re-invention has seeped into Jack Penate's new album. Titled 'Everything Is New' the singer admits that his new songs are "a bit bipolar" given the dichotomy between the upbeat music and serious lyrics.

Continuing, Penate said that the new material documents the "underbelly of my life" before dismissing his debut album as "a bunch of teenage stories".

Jack Penate releases his new album 'Everything Is New' on June 22nd. You can listen to it right now by clicking HERE!
