Introducing… ‘Don’t Make A Scene’

A field guide to putting on DIY shows...

With the mainstream becoming ever more insular and difficult to penetrate, a renewed thirst for DIY creativity seems to be sweeping across the land.

It's there in a plethora of new artists, it's there in a host of new labels… and it's there most vividly in the growing phenomenon of DIY touring.

Utilising unexpected venues, playing to dedicated crowds and creating truly memorable nights, it's a pattern which seems to grow almost daily.

Fancy getting involved? Well, you could do worse than pick up a copy of 'Don't Make A Scene'. A new, 84 page zine, the first pressing is limited to 300 copies but contains some fantastic advice.

Organisers have gone straight to those-who-know, recruiting articles from Chris Tipton (Upset the Rhythm, London: 'Curate your event with imagination, honour and taste'), Fielding Hope (Cry Parrot / Cafe Oto, Glasgow / London: 'Applying for funding'), Andy Inglis (5000 / former manager of the Luminaire, London: 'We're good at taking things for free'), Johnny Lynch (Lost Map, Isle of Eigg: 'Some things I've learnt about putting on gigs') and Andy Abbott (That Fucking Tank / Wharf Chambers, Leeds: 'DIY bother? Reasons to keep doing it') alongside many, many more.

It's a handy, easy to read guide to kickstarting this DIY thing – however it is defined – in your area. Compiled by Rob St. John and Bartholomew Owl (from Edinburgh band eagleowl) you can find full information HERE.
