One of the greatest labels in the history of recorded music is celebrating its birthday today (January 12th), as legendary Detroit imprint Motown turns 50.

Founded by Berry Gordy in 1959 with an $800 loan from his family, Motown went on to become one of the most successful record labels in the United States acting as a paradigm for black-owned business during the civil rights era.

The first act signed to the label were The Matadors. Led by Smokey Robinson they swiftly renamed themselves The Miracles, and scored hit after hit penned by the astonishing songwriting skills of Robinson.

A close knit operation, Motown artists would continually help each other perfect their act. From dancing through to singing, Motown's acts began to excel with their revue tours becoming huge attractions across an America still divided along racial grounds.

Amongst the most notable alumni from the Motown school of talent are The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and of course the king of pop himself Michael Jackson.

With a back catalogue second to none in popular music, Motown deserves our most heartfelt thanks and applause!
