Hall Of Fame Woodstock Exhibition
40th anniversary celebrated
The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock with a new exhibition.
Way back when, going to a festival meant more than booking a few days off your work. Festivals were mammoth events that stood at the pinnacle of the counter culture, a place where ideas would be shared alongside dodgy drugs.
Held on farm in upstate New York, Woodstock has become one of the most iconic events of the 60s. Taking place over three days the festival was free entry, with fans turning up from all over the United States.
The remarkable display of camaraderie helped give birth to a variety of causes, with many vegetarian and feminist groups tracing their origins back to that fateful weekend.
With performers including The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Ten Years After and Sly & The Family Stone it was, quite simply, a hell of a gig. With the founders attempting to bring the event back later this year, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has arranged a special new exhibition to commemorate the festival.
'Woodstock: The 40th Anniversary' is due to take place between July 3rd and November 29th and will feature several items from the iconic event. In addition to mementoes from bands who performed at the festival the exhibition will include several items donated by Woodstock's executive producer Michael Lang.
Amongst the gems set to be displayed are Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's performance contract, the original press release for the festival, the vest Lang wore to the event and many more.
The original hand-written plan for the entire Woodstock festival, and a letter from The Beatles' Apple Corp to Lang discussing potential performances by various artists, which never materialised.
There are a number of other celebrations planned for the anniversary. The iconic 'Woodstock' movie is due to be re-released and expanded, now lasting for an astonishing four hours.
