Green Day - The Musical

'American Idiot' to reach stage

American chart smashing punks Green Day are set to turn their album 'American Idiot' into a musical.

Green Day were down on their luck before roaring back with 2004's 'American Idiot'. The one time snotty punks had become sedate in their old age, but suddenly seemed keen to thumb their nose at authority.

'American Idiot' was a massive success, buoyed by the Bush baiting (yet radio friendly) title track. Selling over 13 million copies and counting, the album is now the band's most successful to date and thrust Green Day into the mainstream as an immensely influential cultural force.

It now seems that the band are set to extend into the world of theatre. A concept album, it has long been rumoured that 'American Idiot' could be turned into a musical and it now seems as if those plans will come to fruition.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong confirmed in a new interview that production will open this September at the Berkley Repertory Theatre in California, with the director being revealed as experienced theatre type Michael Mayer.

Billie Joe Armstrong told the New York Times: "It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that’s what I love about it. When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream."

Director Michael Mayer told the newspaper that he had thought of the idea when working on his previous project. "It was very much in my head all that time (during Spring Awakening). Sometimes I really would say things like, "Why can’t this have a groove like 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams'?""

Green Day's new album '21st Century Breakdown' is set to be released on May 15th.
