Christopher Owens not a fan of the show...

Girls frontman Christopher Owens has slated the HBO show 'Girls' accusing them of stealing the name of his band.

What's in a name? For Christopher Owens... everything. The songwriter has led Girls to critical acclaim, playing shows across the globe.

But that hasn't stopped his temperature rising after watching a new HBO series. Following some savvy New York media types, 'Girls' has been a ratings success - but the show has also earned Owens' wrath.

Taking to Twitter, the songwriter said: "Do you think that TV show even thought twice before using our bands name for their show? I'll bet they were just like "fuck it, fuck them" before adding "It's a bit sucky to be informed by a giant company like HBO that you don't matter enough culturally to not have your name taken away or used".

The songwriter could see the funny side, though. "I've got an idea, let's write a TV show about an American family and shoot it in their home and call it The Smiths" he wrote. "I've got an idea, let's start a band and call it The Simpsons".

Later engaging in some light hearted debate with fans, Christopher Owens did dwell on some important points. "I just would've expected the people behind that show to say, hey let's use a slightly different name since that band is using it already".

"Girls is obviously a word that cannot be owned by anyone, But a choice was made and anyone that really respected us wouldn't have used it".

Finishing, Christopher Owens wrote: "I said, it's all good, I just believe it wouldn't have happened of we had a top 20 hit is all".

Keep writing songs like this, and some day... they just might.
