Former Beatles In Meditation Plea
McCartney and Starr to broadcast message
Former Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are set to broadcast a public webcast today (April 3rd) in order to endorse the David Lynch Foundation’s initiative to teach one million at-risk youths to meditate.
The Beatles famously travelled to India in 1968, where they learned from the feet of the Maherishi. According to Donovan that's not all they discovered - he apparently taught them the finger picking techniques that resulted in 'Dear Prudence'.
In a statement Sir Paul McCartney reveals the impact the trip had on him. "Getting a mantra from Maharishi and then learning how to use it. The rest is up to yourself. So actually, being given a mantra and being taught what to do with it was the most important aspect of the trip—the rest was great fun."
Asked why youths should meditate, McCartney claimed that the process is backed by scientific research. "I think meditation offers a moment in your day to be at peace with yourself and therefore the universe, which once was thought of as a slightly silly hippie idea, but now it’s much more accepted and even fits with some of the most advanced scientific thinking."
Last year was a traumatic one for Ringo Starr. Besieged by fan mail, he issued a web message telling fans to stop sending him memorabilia. Those who continued, he said, would have their packages destroyed.
Infuriating fans in the process, Starr ended the message with the repeated mantra "peace and love".
Sir Paul McCartney is also set to appear at a benefit concert in New York tonight (April 3rd) which will also feature Eddie Vedder, Moby, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Paul Horn, Bettye LaVette, Mike Love, and My Morning Jacket's Jim James.
All proceeds from the event will go to the David Lynch Foundation.
