Flying Lotus Rap Alter Ego Captain Murphy Gains Origin Story

Via Adult Swim...

At any one time, Steve Ellison seems to have about a dozen projects in some state of completion.

Focussing on a new album under his Flying Lotus moniker, the producer has quietly shelved work on a proposed rap album.

Ignited in 2012, Ellison's rap alter ego Captain Murphy has a devoted cult following in his own right. Now Adult Swim have pieced together an origin story for the rap character, which is every bit as vivid and engaging as the music itself.

Illustrated by Adam Fuchs, the clip reveals the roots of Captain Murphy as well as pointing towards potential future paths for the character. "The short is that it’s the prelude to what Murphy could be," Adam Fuchs tells Noisey. "He’s in this world now and it could just set it up for anything. I wanted to do a short that was relatable to people where they could watch it and get more out of it than some pretty psychedelic visuals, there’s more substance to this thing."

"From the Adult Swim side, Captain Murphy is a fascinating character. Adam and I and Steve (Ellison, Flying Lotus) always felt that there should be an idea that this is only his most recent incarnation,” Adult Swim’s Jason DeMarco explains. “He’s like a character or a force that you can tell a lot of stories with, and he doesn’t just have to always be this thing. He’s more than a man."
