Flowered Up Singer Dies
Liam Maher passes away
Liam Maher the singer with early 90s baggy legends Flowered Up has died, according to reports from his label.
The early 90s music scene was dominated by Manchester. Transformed by Acid House the city boasted two pioneering bands, as well as The Hacienda - at that point the coolest club on the planet.
With bands across the North claiming to be from Manchester is seemed as if London had a lot of catching up to do.
Emerging from the Southern wing of Acid House, Flowered Up were club kids who decided to form a band. Mixing dance music with indie they echoed the experiments of Happy Mondays, and even had a dancer - Barry Mooncult.
Appearing on the cover of both NME and Sounds before they had even released a record, a series of singles on hip label Heavenly only served to increase the hype around the band.
However Flowered Up's legendary debauchery made recording difficult. Debut album 'A Life With Brian' was critically panned, as being unfocussed and failing to live up to the group's potent live potential.
Yet Flowered Up had one final trick up their sleeve. Releasing the vast 12 minute single 'Weekender' the band had the last laugh, effortlessly blending the sound and atmosphere of rave with the rock dynamic.
Splitting in 1994, singer Liam Maher went on to have a brief solo career. Signing to Alan McGee's label Creation in 2001 the two parted company without any music being released.
Now sources at Liam Maher's label have confirmed that he has died. No further details are known, with a statement expected later today (October 21st).
