Flores Deals With Loss On ‘Undercover’

Maths Time Joy steps in on production...

Loss is a universal concept.

Something anyone can relate to, it can often be difficult to express in words – after all, how do you describe what has already gone?

Flores tackles loss on new track 'Undercover', an electronic soaked R&B hymnal that refuses to sit still.

Gently unfurling, her voice teases out new meaning from that simple yet direct lyricism.

Online now, Clash invited Flores to break down 'Undercover'…

I wrote 'Undercover' after Timothy (Maths Time Joy) sent me a beat last summer and it always feels like unwrapping a Christmas present when I get an attachment with his email.

I really liked the beat, it was very trap and Tiller-esque. So I wrote on it and when I sent him my demo, he had a change of heart and redid the entire beat. Stripped the verse down and the pre chorus, which were both kept form the original. Switched up the chords and the hook.

I remember listening to the revision for the first time and my heart was racing when I heard the chorus; it hit me like a wall. It was an incredible feeling because I knew this needed to be a big chorus. I had ideas of having heavy loads of gospel harmonies, which are really inspiring for me. It took me so many months to write the chorus, simply because Timothy had amazed me with this giant chorus, that just will literally eat up any weak vocal. It had to be dynamic and powerful and that pushed me a bit out of my comfort zone, but I was very glad that did.

Lyrically the song is focused on how we are push people that we know we love away out of fear of getting hurt or feeling pain. So we end up losing people that we truly do love and that regret can weigh a ton over a lifetime I believe. The chorus is very direct in trying to convey that sometimes if you want to reconnect to the place of love you need to put down your pride, put down the list, put down the fear and the guard, and get vulnerable. One of the most vulnerable places you can be is when under the covers.

It's the third single and last on the EP so I really wanted it to be something special. Timothy visions for the songs and concepts are so brilliant and I really am pushed as an artist vocally and lyrically to represent part of his music as well. It’s been an amazing time working with him for this EP. And I’m very excited for the future and all the new music to come.
