Flaming Lips For Earth Day

Massive Washington event planned

Ohio oddballs The Flaming Lips are set to take part in the upcoming Earth Day celebrations in Washington DC.

Earth Day is an annual event which is designed to raise awareness of environmental concerns. With some nations (*cough* United States) still to ratify the Kyoto accord on global warming, the upcoming events are perhaps more important than ever.

The Flaming Lips will perform at the event, headlining a bill that also features moe and Tex-Mex rockers Los Lobos. Wayne Coyne's troops are battle-hardened in preparation for their forthcoming US tour, and recently released their bizarre movie 'Christmas On Mars'.

Recorded in Coyne's back garden, the film is a testament to the group's marvellous pop vision which transforms their live shows into something truly spectacular.

British audiences will have to wait until later this summer to catch a glimpse of the group. The Flaming Lips have been confirmed as headliners for Scotland's RockNess event, where they will transform the main stage into a psychedelic array of bubbles and lasers.

The upcoming Washington event takes place on The National Mall and is in partnership with Green Apple Festival Day. A free event, Hollywood actor Chevy Chase has agreed to be the MC while the show will also feature performances by DJ Spooky, the Howard University Drummers and the Joy of Motion Dance Center's teen hip hop company, Urban Impact.

Last year events took place across the United States to celebrate Earth Day and attracted over 200,000 people. This Sunday's (April 19th) events will see over ten cities becoming involved.

The Flaming Lips will play Earth Day celebrations in Washington DC on April 19th.
