Fiery Furnaces Continue Beck Feud

Matthew Friedberger issues new statement

Brooklyn duo Fiery Furnaces have issued a new statement criticising Beck after the singer seemingly mocked their supposed 'feud' in a new song.

2009 has been marked by the return of bitching to the world of indie rock. A war of words between Wavves and Black Lips sparked a bar brawl in Brooklyn, while Fiery Furnaces have been taking on all comers.

A recent interview saw Fiery Furnaces guitarist Matthew Friedberger lay into Radiohead, criticising their move to release a download in tribute of war veteran Harry Patch - labelling the decision "bogus".

After this the band issued another statement clearing up their views on Radiohead. Seemingly Fiery Furnaces are not fans of the Oxford band, and also dragged Beck into the argument.

Referring to the band's mis-interpretation of 'Harry Patch' Beck struck back with the free download track 'Harry Partch'. A tribute to the American composer, Beck's track labelled the feud 'imaginary'.

Now Fiery Furnaces have written a new blog, in which they question Beck's motives. "Doesn't this imaginary feud demand imaginary responses?" wondered Matthew Friedberger.

"Shouldn't we step - isn't now the time to ascend - from the merely virtual to the boldly imaginary?"

"So as we all move forward, shouldn't we admit that posting songs on the internet - being virtual, in other words - is so last year? So to speak. Isn't that what every music management company intern from Northeastern recommends that bands do? That can't be right."

Beck has yet to respond.
