Fatboy Slim Concept Album Plans
With David Byrne, Cyndi Lauper and more
British dance legend Fatboy Slim is set to work on a new concept album with David Byrne, Martha Wainwright and more.
Fatboy Slim is no stranger to ambitious projects. The bass player in The Housemartins, work with Beat International and countless others makes Norman Cook's musical CV more varied than most.
Last year's Brighton Port Authority saw the producer rein in a host of guests for a spectacular return. Norman Cook's first album in some time saw the BPI's debut album boast appearances from Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Dizzee Rascal and more.
Now it seems that Norman Cook is to craft a new concept album. The producer is currently putting the finishing touches to 'Here Lies Love' - based on the life of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines.
"Each track is sung by a different singer and there's some very interesting guests on there," he said.
"It's a story-telling thing, like 'Evita', but coming at it from a different angle in that it tells the untold story that people didn't know about Imelda Marcos. It's not just about the shoes."
Norman Cook went on to reveal that he began planning the new album four years ago. Originally designed to be a musical, the new concept album follows the life of Marcos - famed for having one of the largest collections of shoes on the planet.
Together with her husband Ferdinand, Imelda Marcos was overthrown in a popular revolt in 1986 and fled to Hawaii.
"Because the story is more about what was going on in (New York disco club) Studio 54 rather than what went on in the Philippines, we wanted to reflect that, so it's kind of dance music based," Cook told BBC 6 Music.
Fatboy Slim confirmed the album would have a lengthy cast including Santigold, Tori Amos and Candi Payne.
