Soul singer was only joking

Soul legend Etta James was caught on film recently criticising Beyonce and newly elected President Barack Obama, an act she says was done in jest.

Etta James is nothing less than a living legend of soul music. With a stunning voice and feisty persona she cut through the male-dominated world of rhythm and blues, releasing hit after hit on the iconic Chess label. Some, such as 'I Just Want To Make Love To You', have gone to become hits in other decades proving the timeless nature of her classic music.

Beyonce recently sang a version of Etta James' 1961 song 'At Last' at Barack Obama's inauguration ball. Onstage recently James mocked the President's "big ears" and dismissed Beyonce.

It turns out those comments were meant as a joke. "I didn't really mean anything," James told the New York Daily News. "Even as a little child, I've always had that comedian kind of attitude. ... That's probably what went into it."

Apparently the audience took the comments in good faith. "They were all laughing, and it was funny,” she said.

Nonetheless, when asked if she felt she could have done a better job than Beyonce, Etta James replied “I think so. That's a shame to say that."

We think so too, Etta.
