Bob Birch found dead

Elton John's bass player Bob Birch has been found dead after an apparent suicide.

Sad news from the United States. Reports are coming in that Bob Birch - long term bass player with Elton John - has died.

According to the BBC, officials in the United States have stated that the musician died of a gunshot wound to the head. LA County Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter explained that the body of Bob Birch was found in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Dr Ed Winter added that the case was "being investigated as a possible suicide".

Bob Birch joined Elton John's band back in 1992 and had played and recorded with the iconic songwriter across two decades. TMZ report that no suicide note was found, and there was no evidence of drug use.

Currently taking a break between live commitments, Elton John has yet to comment publicly on the death. A short statement on his Facebook page this morning read:

"We are very sad to report the sudden death today of Bob Birch, Elton's bass player and backing vocalist, in Los Angeles. Bob had been a member of the Elton John band since 1992, the longest-serving bassist in Elton's touring band. We send love and condolences to Michele Birch, and to their son, Jonathan."
