Ellie Goulding For Number One?

'Lights' top of midweek charts

Hotly tipped newcomer Ellie Goulding is sitting on top of the midweek charts with her debut album ‘Lights’.

Ellie Goulding emerged last year, with a handful of single. Missing out on the Top 40, the singer impressed enough to be given the ‘Critics Choice’ nod at the BRIT Awards.

A huge honour, previous winners include Florence And The Machine. Also sitting at the top of the BBC’s Sound Of 2010 poll the singer has been surrounded in hype during the run up to her debut album.

‘Lights’ is an impressive debut, showing no small amount of pop nous although detractors point to a lack of substance in her songwriting. Recently it seemed the pressure was getting to Ellie Goulding with the singer admitting that she had been taken to hospital after suffering from stress.

However the media attention is only set to increase with the singer’s debut album ‘Lights’ sitting top of the mid-week charts. Ellie Goulding is more than 40% ahead of her nearest rival, ‘The Fame’ by Lady Gaga.

The controversial American star returned to the top of the album charts last week after dominating the BRIT Awards. It seems as if Lady Gaga’s three pronged haul is now match for Ellie Golding, with the British singer looking odds on to top the charts on Sunday.

Recent single ‘Starry Eyed’ entered the Top Ten, with the track peaking at number four amid strong radio airplay. Released before media hype commenced, debut single ‘Under The Sheets’ reached a mere 52.
