Eleanor Rigby Revealed
Update: Signature Fetches £115,000
An accounts log which features the signature of Eleanor Rigby, which some claim inspired the Beatles classic 1966 song, has fetched over £115,000 at auction.
The song was released on the Beatles' 1966 album 'Revolver' and has become one of the group's best loved songs. The song's writer Sir Paul McCartney recently donated a hospital accounts log from Liverpool's City Hospital to the Sunbeam Trust charity, in which was found the signature of one E. Rigby.
Rigby was apparently a scullery maid at the hospital, fueling speculation over who the true character was. McCartney however, has insisted that the document is purely a coincidence. "If someone wants to spend money buying a document to prove a fictitious character exists, that's fine with me", the former Beatle claimed.
McCartney says the name came from a combination of actress Eleanor Bron, who starred in The Beatles’ movie Help, and a wine merchant.
Nevertheless, the document fetched £115,000 at auction last night (November 27th) in the Idea Generation Gallery.
