Edwyn Collins Confirms New Release
First new material since 2005 stroke
Scottish songwriting legend Edwyn Collins is to release a new song - his first since suffering a stroke in 2005.
Edwyn Collins is one of Scotland's most important songwriters. The lead singer with Orange Juice, the band's debut single 'Blue Boy' lit the torch paper for Scottish pop inspiring everyone from Bell & Sebastian to Teenage Fanclub and beyond.
A maverick talent, in recent years Edwyn Collins carved out a reputation for himself as a noted producer. However the singer suffered a tragic bout of ill-health in 2005 as he fell victim to a debilitating stroke.
Teaching himself to speak and write again, Edwyn Collins recently made an emotional return to the stage. Now the Scottish songwriter has contributed his first new song in five years to a new tribute album.
A salute to soul / gospel icon Mavis Staples, the track 'I'm Feeling Lucky' is taken from the forthcoming 'MAVIS' album. Produced by Ashley Beedle and Darren Moore, the track is a gospel inflected bout of indie-soul.
Due for release on February 22nd, the album also features Candi Staton, Welsh solo artist Cerys Matthews and more.
In an emotional touch, Edwyn Collins' 19 year old son William blasts through the guitar solo on 'I'm Feeling Lucky'. Currently working on a solo album, Collins has recruited Ryan Jarman of The Cribs and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols to help craft new material.
Edwyn Collins has confirmed an appearance at the album's launch party on February 18th. Set in London's Luminaire venue the Scottish icon will be joined by Ed Harcourt, Kevin Rowland and more.
'MAVIS' is due to be released on February 22nd.
