Editors Hit Back

Exclusive: Tom Smith speaks to Clash

Brooding English indie types Editors have hit back at their critics, speaking to ClashMusic about a recent online rant posted by singer Tom Smith.

Editors have risen to become one of the nation's biggest groups. With their anthemic songs the band recall the widescreen sonic vision of U2 but with the emotional intensity of departed Manchester greats Joy Division.

New album 'In This Light And On This Evening' is a case in point. Composed during a break from the road, Editors decided to take on board electronic influences which has resulted in a brooding and aggressive album.

Perhaps slightly too aggressive. In a posting on the band's official website recently singer Tom Smith posted a statement in which he hit back at his critics.

“I am so fucking bored of people asking us why we’re so ‘dark’,” he riled. “Or worse, questioning our integrity for being this way. This is how we do it, it excites us to express ourselves like this, to be honest we don’t even understand what the alternative is and the alternatives we can imagine are too boring for us to even consider.”

In a recent interview with Clash Magazine the singer explained a little of his feelings at the time. “I don’t mind people calling us dark or describing us as dark,” he reasons. “It’s when people question why we’re like that. I grew tired of that cynicism towards us because of the fact we are dark."

"Personally, I like the way you can get dark lyrics and serious things in life into people’s homes or cars because the songs are big or very melodic or poppy. I like that. Even the sounds on the record, the way they’re kind of sinister and scary at times. It’s just the way we love to do it.”

Editors are set to release 'In This Light And On This Evening' on October 12th.
