DJ Food Returns
New album from mysterious dance guru
Mysterious dance guru and Ninja Tunes legend DJ Food has confirmed details of his first new album in nine years.
Some artists evolve, but none evolve quite like DJ Food. The 'Doctor Who' of British dance music, the name was first used to support a series of 'Jazz Breaks' compilations in the early 90s before becoming an artist in its own right.
Legendary duo Coldcut used the moniker for a time, before producers such as Patrick Carpenter came on board. After this Coldcut departed, and DJ Food continued with input from Strictly Kev. Soon Carpenter himself found himself distracted by other projects, and Strictly Kev inherited the title of DJ Food.
Beginning with 'A Recipe For Disaster' back in 1995, DJ Food has specialised in breakbeat, trip hop and a variety of other sounds. Helping to define the Ninja Tunes sound in the late 90s, the name has not been used since 2000's 'Kaleidoscope'.
A new EP is set to revive the good name of DJ Food. Titled 'One Man's Weird Is Another Man's World' perhaps EP is a misnomer as the record lasts for over 30 minutes. Just the first part of a series of three, the release is part of the build up to DJ Food's first album in nine years.
A DJ legend, Strictly Kev has been busy outwith the DJ Food moniker. He re-scored The Monkees' brain melting classic 'Head' before taking the soundtrack on tour a part of a three deck mix.
Give or take a handful of remixes and compilation tracks, however, DJ Food has been silent for some time. The new EP is a spectacular return, including Natural Self, Dr Rubberfunk and even a member of Tortoise.
Post rock legend Bundy K Brown appears on the 13 minute poly-rhythmic percussion epic 'A Trick Of The Ear', a stunning mixture of styles that veers and evolves through several different stages yet never becomes self-indulgent.
The new EP is one of a series planned by DJ Food, which will then form the backbone of the dance guru's forthcoming album. Tentatively named 'Stolen Moments' fans shouldn't get their hopes up - the record isn't scheduled to be released until next Spring.
DJ Food is set to release 'One Man's Weird Is Another Man's World' on July 6th.
