Dizzee Rascal Torture Protest

Artists join growing dissent

Returning UK hip hop icon Dizzee Rascal has joined in the ongoing dissent against CIA sanctioned 'torture' methods, used against dissidents throughout the world.

If you've been reading the same reports that ClashMusic has, then the CIA seems like a frightening bunch of people. The policy of rendition could see you picked up from the streets of London, bundled in the back of an airplane and being lead out on the tarmac of Guantanamo Bay.

Some of the agency's questioning methods have been questioned. The use of excessively loud music against suspects, the 'water boarding' technique have all resulted in massive worldwide protests.

Newly elected American President Barack Obama has vowed to eradicate the policy of rendition - and various 'enhanced interrogation techniques' - but as yet no official action has been taken.

Dizzee Rascal is amongst those who have voiced their concern over the CIA's actions. The hip hop star has joined the pressure group Reprieve has instigated the Zero dB campaign in an attempt to force the United States government to enforce the United Nations' Convention Against Torture.

Each musician involved has been filmed standing in silence to create a 'visual petition'. Also signing up for the protest are groups such as Massive Attack and Doves.

Reprieve's director Clive Stafford Smith urged people to take part, saying in a statement: "Torture should have been left in the Middle Ages; yet it rears its head in new forms. Music torture tears people apart mentally – as much as any razorblade. I encourage everyone to join our silent protest against the use of music torture."

Dizzee Rascal is set to release his new single 'Bonkers' on Monday (May 18th).
