Dizzee Rascal To Tackle MPs
Rapper weighs in on expenses scandal
It seems as if Dizzee Rascal is about to get political on a new track as the rapper takes aims at the expenses scandal engulfing the House of Commons.
Sadly for some, Britain does not have a single, definitive Constitution. Unlike the United States, the United Kingdom relies on a series of laws and precedents to keep our elected officials in line, a system which has in recent time taken a bashing.
With MPs away from home for the bulk of their work, a complicated expenses system developed over time to aid them. However recently it seems as if this system has shifted from aiding democracy, and has instead been abused by several public officials.
With much hand wringing in the press, and countless apologies from politicians, the scandal has become one of the defining moments in recent British politics. So who better to turn to for advice than Dizzee Rascal?
Some people say he's bonkers, but in a new interview the rapper promises to take MPs to task. Dizzee Rascal confirmed to The Times recently that he has written a track named 'Dirty Cash' which focusses on the scandal.
The rapper has previously demonstrated an interest in politics. The track 'Hold Ya Mouf' from his Mercury Prize winning debut album contained the lined "I'm a problem for Anthony Blair" but recently Dizzee has been concentrating on taking on dance influences.
Dizzee Rascal isn't the only musician to speak out on the scandal. Kasabian blasted greedy MPs, although the band's Serge Pizzorno saw the lighter side of the situation, mocking a politician who claimed for work on his moat.
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, meanwhile, refused to vote in the European elections as he was disgusted by our elected officials.
In a recent radio interview Nicky Wire of Welsh rock group Manic Street Preachers said that "If we were all placed under the same scrutiny as politicians, I reckon we'd all be out of a job, I really do, because we're all corrupt."
Which is nice. Dizzee Rascal may well have last word, with his new track containing the rap "What do you expect from MPs anyway? / Not much if you've got any sense".
Dizzee Rascal is due to release his new album 'Tongue N Cheek' later this year.
