Death Cab Get Political
Voter Registration Drive By Band
Best selling emo rockers Death Cab For Cutie are set to push for voter registration in the upcoming US elections by offering a free gig to the US college that has the most voters.
The band are known for having liberal political views, and the new scheme is a reflection of that. Death Cab For Cutie will launch a competition that pits registered colleges against one another, and the faculty with the most registered voters will win a a very special concert by the band.
Signed to Sub Pop, Death Cab For Cutie have made a name for themselves with their anthemic rock - and as if they weren't busy enough in that outfit some members also perform as The Postal Service. The band are avowed supporters of Democratic candidate Barack Obama, and the move will no doubt benefit Obama - young voters tend to be Democrats but frequently don't vote.
The Ultimate College Bowl will be sponsored by Myspace as well as non-partisan organisations Rock The Vote and Declare Yourself. Voter drives are not new to rock and roll - Bob Dylan was a veteran of them in the early 60s.
The college that registers the greatest number of votes win the gig, with the result coming in November. There also also runners up prizes of scholarship money and Guitar Hero 2 prizes. Guitar Hero: bigger than democracy.
