Dave Grohl is helping to piece together a documentary about Los Angeles studio Sound City.

Some studios seems to have an atmosphere, a life of their own. Something going beyond the kit inside, an ambiance that helps to inspire musicians to push themselves further and further. Los Angeles studio Sound City was certainly among them.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl recorded at the studio numerous times, and is now set to helm a documentary about the recording complex. The nicest guy in rock, the drummer was able to call in a few favour - set to appear in the documentary are (deep breath) Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Lars Ulrich and Rick Springfield.

A trailer for the documentary has emerged online (via Consequence of Sound) alongside a quote from Dave Grohl. “When Sound City closed last year it was a very sad day,” the musician reflected.

“That place was like a church. The list of people that recorded there is like a virtual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We recorded Nevermind there back in 1991. That funky old place had the best drum room in the world. The drum sound at the beginning of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit?’ That’s Sound City. I decided to make a film about that feeling when you put five guys in a room, hit ‘record’ and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. Expect some epic jam sessions.”
