Daniel Johnston On Cult Documentary

Film 'wasn't fair'

American songwriter Daniel Johnston has hit out at the documentary based on his life.

Released in 2006, 'The Devil And Daniel Johnston' was a provocative and award winning analysis of a potent American songwriter. Emerging from cult obscurity, Johnston's frail voice and emotive music found a devoted cult following.

However Daniel Johnston also struggled with bi-polar disorder. The film shows both sides of his personality, but has endured some criticism for its perceived failure to deal with the seriousness of the singer's condition.

Working on a series of new recordings, Daniel Johnston recently revealed his thoughts on the film to BBC 6Music.

"It wasn’t really fair because it really talked about the worst experiences of my life," Johnston said. "I wish they had included more music instead of making it one of those Stranger Than Fiction shows."

Aside from lapses into depression and schizophrenia, Daniel Johnston has also enjoyed lengthy periods of mental well being. The singer released a stunning album last year, and is currently working on a new collection of material.

Finally able to live from his art, Daniel Johnston spoke of the joys in his life. "It's really cool that I’m making a living after all these years. I’m doing a lot better than I’ve ever done."

"I was starving to death working for McDonalds when I first got on MTV."
