The first picture of Andre 3000 in the new Jimi Hendrix biopic has emerged.
A frequent session musician, Jimmy James had already worked with the likes of Little Richard before deciding to host a New York residency at the Cafe Wha? in the summer of 1966. Spotted by Chas Chandler, within a few weeks the guitarist would become Jimi Hendrix and storm a London music scene rapidly flowering into psychedelia.
The story of his transformation is set to be the subject of a new biopic, with Andre 3000 featuring as the iconic guitarist. An appropriate choice, perhaps, given the rapper's often outlandish fashion sense, his furtive creativity and his refusal to sit in the boxes afforded to him by critics.
Written and directed by John Ridley, the film is called 'All Is By My Side' and the first photo of Andre 3000 playing Jimi Hendrix has emerged online. It's a nice likeness - the rapper seems to capture the guitarist's oft-noted quiet, sensitive side.
The Jimi Hendrix Estate, though, have refused to co-operate with film makers. As a result, none of the guitarist's work features in the film which instead uses soundalike performances of songs by Muddy Waters, Ray Charles and Bob Dylan - all of whom featured prominently in the Seattle born artist's early sets.
'All Is By My Side' is set to be released later this year.
