Carl Barat To Judge Music Award

Indie star to pick best newcomer

Former Libertine and Dirty Pretty Things singer Carl Barat has been picked as one of the judges for the XFM New Music Award, it has been announced.

Carl Barat is one of the most pivotal figures in British music this decade. As a member of the Libertines he virtually defined the template for UK indie, before hitting paydirt with Dirty Pretty Things.

Now without a band after Dirty Pretty Things called it a day, Barat has been asked to judge the new music prize. Together with Snow Patrol mainman Gary Lightbody, Barat will leaf through ten debut albums released in 2008.

XFM listeners can vote for the shortlist of ten, before the indie giants come lumbering in to pick their favourite. 2008 was a bumper year for stunning debuts with Late Of The Pier, Glasvegas (friends of Barat's...) and Errors amongst those who impressed ClashMusic.

The winner of the XFM New Music Award will be announced on February 3rd.
