Broken Social Scene Side Project

Charles Spearin goes solo

Charles Spearin, a member of acclaimed Canadian collective Broken Social Scene, has announced details of the first album by his new group The Happiness Project.

Broken Social Scene are not so much a band but a rolling collective. Taken together, the group's output and myriad side projects reveal Canadian music to be in its best shape ever, churning out a seemingly endless supply of ground-breaking releases.

Charles Spearin is a long time member of the group, and fellow Canadians Do Make Say Think. The Happiness Project began from ideas that Spearin had on tour, and began performing sound collages with loops and electronics before Broken Social Scene would take the stage.

In the album's liner notes Spearin writes "in the hot summer months all the kids in the neighbourhood play outside together and everyone is out on their porch enjoying each other’s company, telling stories and sharing thoughts. A year or so ago I began inviting some of them over to the house for a casual interview vaguely centered around the subject of happiness. In some cases we never broached the subject directly but none-the-less my friends began to call it my “Happiness Project”. “

An unusual and inventive project, 'The Happiness Project' is released on March 23rd.
