Bowie Not In Berlin

Update: No Berlin return for star

Rumours that David Bowie is working on a new album in Berlin are false, ClashMusic has learned.

It had been claimed that in a new Twitter message David Bowie wrote to fans "Cheers from a snowy Berlin! Working on some new material!". However, it is now thought that this is a hoax, with ClashMusic being assured by a source close to the musician that the artist is not in Germany.

Berlin holds a romantic allure for Bowie fans, as this is where he crafted some of his most daring and influential work. Escaping from the cocaine induced paranoia that had engulfed him, David Bowie retreated to Berlin in the late 70s. Taking Iggy Pop with him, the pair were seduced by the seedy nightlife and the new synthesised sounds erupting from groups such as Kraftwerk and Neu!.

What resulted was some of Bowie's finest work. Commonly named the 'Berlin Trilogy' the albums 'Low', 'Heroes' and 'Lodger' were groundbreaking, blending electronic and ambient influences into the rock template. It also produced one of Bowie's most enduring hits, in 'Heroes'.

Bowie last released an album of new material in 2003 with the celebrated 'Reality' album. Since then the legendary star has had a heart attack which led to an extended spell of recuperation.

There is no release date set for David Bowie's new album.
