Bjork Unveils Manchester Installation

Bjork is set to bring her arts installation 'Biophilia' to Manchester for three weeks this summer.

An utterly unique talent, Bjork is in complete control of her own career. Granting her artistic independence, it also means that - if she so wishes - the Icelandic singer can simply shut up shop.

Which has been the case recently. Performing only a handful of live shows it has been a total of three years since Bjork touched down on British soil. Now the singer has confirmed details of a new arts installation in Manchester.

Taking place as part of the Manchester International Festival, Bjork will bring her 'Biophilia' project to the city. Spread across three weeks, the singer will perform six intimate shows at Campfield Market Hall - her first UK shows in three years.

Mixing music, technology and nature the new project highlights many of Bjork's recent concerns. Fronting a campaign to protect the natural wilderness on Iceland, the singer has been outspoken in her criticism of government policy and the intrusion of oil companies in areas of natural beauty.

A multi-media project 'Biophilia' celebrates the function of sound in nature. Moving from the tiniest elements to the wide reaches of space, the installation mixes traditional art forms with new technology.

Set to release a series of apps to further demonstrate her ideas, the 'Biophilia' shows will present material destined for her new studio album. Still under construction, Bjork has been working on the full length version of 'Biophilia' for some time.

The shows will feature new material performed on specially constructed instruments. Bjork has built: a bespoke digitally-controlled pipe organ; a 30 foot pendulum that harnesses the earth’s gravitational pull; a bespoke gamelan-celeste hybrid and more.

Ultimately, any Bjork show is impossible to second guess. Opening on June 30th the installation runs until July 16th.
