Outspoken British songwriter Billy Bragg is to star in a forthcoming London play.

Billy Bragg has always been determined to do his own thing. Writing a series of songs in his bedroom but unable to find a decent band to play them, the singer simply hit the road as a solo artist.

A folk influenced singer at the height of 80s excess, Billy Bragg's stripped down sound has influenced countless other artists. Politicised by the Miner's Strike, the songwriter became an eloquent voice for members of Britain's politically ostracised classes.

Still writing and recording music, Billy Bragg recently confirmed plans to star in his first ever play. 'Pressure Drop' is to open in London's Wellcome Collection venue on April 19th, and will star Bragg in a new role.

The singer has written music for the Mick Gordon production, which is billed as "part play, part gig, part art installation".

'Pressure Drop' takes its name from a Toots And The Maytals reggae classic, which was later given a punk overhaul by The Clash. According to a report on the BBC, the new show examines working class community through three generational viewpoints.

"I have never done anything like this before, mixing songs with theatre is a totally new experience for me," said Bragg.

The news comes as Billy Bragg mounts a personal protest against high profile bonus payments to bankers. The singer plans to withhold his taxes, unless the government uses the power of veto.

'Pressure Drop' is to run between April 19th and May 12th.
