Beach House On Dream Pop Label
Duo don't mind categorisation
Baltimore duo Beach House have spoken about being labelled 'dream pop' - revealing they don't mind the term.
Perhaps it began with The Cocteau Twin, and a slew of contemporaries on 4AD. Perhaps it began with My Bloody Valentine and the roster of Creation Records. Wherever it began, dream pop doesn't seem to be going away.
Hailing from Baltimore, Beach House are a duo indebted to their forbears but with a very distinct songwriting ability. Latest album 'Teen Dream' is a stunning artistic success, merging indie pop with ethereal vocals.
Often labelled 'dream pop' the duo have revealed that they don't actually mind the label. Speaking to ClashMusic violinist Victoria Legrand claimed that she enjoyed the "harmless" comparison.
“Dreampop is a harmless label and people need genres to understand things, especially if you’re in the industry as that’s how you get people to read about things,” she revealed.
“I don’t think it pigeonholes you unless you make an issue out of it. The ‘dream’ word is mentioned a lot with our music. It has a lot of dreams in it for sure, but with this record there are definitely other words that also spring to mind.”
Continuing, Beach House star Legrand revealed that the new album was among the band's most passionate and physical efforts to date. “This record has a lot of sex in it and it has more balls,” she stated.
“We’re not flowery people at all, even though people may think we are - we’re intense and can actually be pretty vulgar and honest. I think it’s much more of a physical record for us, it’s more there and in-your-face, it’s meatier. The mystery is still there but I think it’s more alive.”
