Aidan Moffat Tackles Scottish Folk Classics

On new project 'Where You're Meant To Be'

Aidan Moffat tackles a series of Scottish folk songs on new project 'Where You're Meant To Be'.

The songwriter took off on an ad hoc tour of Scottish back in 2014, visiting some unusual and far-flung locations.

Absorbing elements of the Scottish folk songbook, he clashes with legendary folk singer Sheila Stewart on the manner in which they should be presented.

Sheila's death last year robbed Scotland of one of its most important voices, and the conversation between these two artists formed the crux of new film Where You're Meant To Be.

Award-winning film-maker Paul Fegan steers the accompanying film, which will premiere at Glasgow Barrowlands on February 19th.

Alongside this, Aidan Moffat is preparing to release a full live album. He explains: "Folk music has a pretty austere reputation, but I was struck by the humour in old Scots songs, so I started out rewriting some classics to adapt them to modern city life, which mostly meant more sex, booze, drugs and swearing. There are sad ones, too, of course – I can't help myself – and even a couple of political messages in true folk tradition. Overall, though, the night seemed more like stand-up comedy than the gigs I'm used to playing."

Check out his version of the bothy ballad 'I'm A Rover' below.

'Where You're Meant To Be' – the studio album – will be released on March 25th.
