Afro-Funk Pioneer William Onyeabor Has Died

Luaka Bop confirm the musician has passed away...

Afro-funk pioneer William Onyeabor has died, record label Luaka Bop has confirmed.

The Nigerian musician released nine albums between 1977 and 1985, a care-free fusion of Afro-funk, electro, and heaven knows what else.

A truly unique artist, William Onyeabor then distanced himself from music, leaving behind a perfectly formed discography and an incredible legend.

Cratediggers unearthed his material, with a new 21st century audience finding themselves seduced by both Onyeabor's music and his enigma.

Luaka Bop released the 'Who Is William Onyeabor?' compilation in 2013, while an acclaimed documentary followed in 2014.

Sadly, William Onyeabor passed away earlier this week. A statement from Luaka Bop confirmed the news, and offered a warm, loving tribute to a genuinely superb musician.
