Beastie Boys icon joins fundraiser

Beastie Boys rapper Ad-Rock is the latest artist to come out in support of Russian punk group Pussy Riot.

Since the death of Adam Yauch last month, the remaining members of the Beastie Boys have been lying low. Issuing the occasional statement, the rap giants have continually thanked fans for their support.

Now Ad-Rock has made his first public appearance since the death of MCA. The hip hop icon was invited to perform a DJ set in New York on Tuesday night (June 12th) and immediately accepted.

The cause? Persecuted Russian punk group Pussy Riot. Still battling criminal charges after a set inside a prominent Moscow cathedral, the outspoken band have not given up hope of freeing their comrades.

Benefits have been taking place around the world, with Ad-Rock being invited to the New York show by feminist art ensemble Permanent Wave.

Of course, Ad-Rock is far from the first big name musician to come out in support of Pussy Riot. Very much a venerated cause for outsiders everywhere, Kathleen Hanna recently issued a righteous statement in support of the persecuted Russian punk outfit.
