Tributes flood in on 10th anniversary

Missy Elliot, P Diddy and many more have paid tribute to Aaliyah on the 10th anniversary of the singer’s death.

First gaining success as a solo artist in the mid 90s, Aaliyah seemed to accomplish a huge amount in a short time. Smashing into the charts with an irresistible mixture of R&B and hip hop, the singer gained enormous commercial success.

Striking out into the film industry, Aaliyah was tipped to become a global star. Lined up to appear alongside Keanu Reeves, the singer was being groomed to appear in the Matrix trilogy before her death.

Fresh from releasing her third album, Aaliyah travelled to the Bahamas to shoot a video. Tragically, the singer’s flight home on August 25th 2001 crashed on take off killing eight people.

Yesterday (August 25th) marked the 10th anniversary of her death. R&B singer Mary J Blige wrote on Twitter: “Good morning twitter fam. Let’s all take a moment to remember our sister Aaliyah!!!”

Elsewhere, Missy Elliot wrote: “Aaliyah til this very day u r still in Your own Lane! Ure music is Timeless! We miss u!”

Drake paid tribute to the tragic singer by writing: “RIP Baby Girl…in my ear at every show letting me know the next move I should make. Love you.”

Aaliyah’s music has not been forgotten. The singer’s total album sales are estimated at around the 30 million mark, with her output having an indelible affect on the evolution of Stateside R&B.
