Iconic as they are, when Clash met Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, the nucleus of new wave pioneers Blondie, for their Issue 103 cover story, it was abundantly clear that the group had no desire to live in the past.
“I don’t like nostalgia especially,” Debbie Harry tells Clash. “It doesn’t appeal to me. I understand why people want to go to see bands that they grew up with or something like that, or relive a little. But our lives have always been centred around music so to be going, ‘Remember, remember, remember...’ doesn’t really do much for your creative mind.”
On new album ‘Pollinator’, the New Yorkers have drawn upon a diverse palette of contemporary talents including Sia and Dev Hynes to capture a sound that is as fresh and forward-thinking as their uncompromising hometown.
Debbie and Chris were interviewed for Clash by Robin Murray, and shot by Agnes Lloyd-Platt with fashion by Victoria Sekrier and hair artistry by Kota Suizu.
Also in the new issue are features with Rae Sremmurd, Karen Elson, Ryan Adams, Sundara Karma, Big Sean, Raye, Julia Michaels, Ray Davies, Tinie Tempah, and James Blunt.
