With Jerry Dammers and Rob Mello

Summer days don’t come much better than those spent lazing about in great company, with summertime sounds and sunshine flavour’s in the air. Today the fine tastes of Four Roses Bourbon and Clash combined to create a prohibition styled Speakeasy, baked in the July sun in one of the coolest venues in East London.

Sat on the very edge of the iconic Victoria Park, the Britannia has been known as one of the best hang-outs to bask in the seasonal sun. Today it was decked out with outdoor seating, stalls where you could buy music and clothes and a wicked selection of sounds, alongside a enough hog roast to feed a mini festival.

The music all day was to have the joyous sounds of jah thread through its fabric, and kicking off proceedings one half of the Trojan Soundsystem set out the mood to follow with some gentle victory vibes. Party purveyors extraordinaire The Soul Jazz Soundsystem brought their far reaching Sounds of the Universe to town with a hip shaking selection of soul jazz roots and rhythm, effortlessly blending decades and genres as the afternoon sun sank. Picking up the skank came DJ headliner Jerry Dammers, looking a little sheepish and late for proceedings, but making up for his tardyness by dropping a dirty dancefloor led smattering of dancehall, dub and ska peppered with some familiar covers of classics like The Beatles.

And so onto todays curators, the famed Trojan Records new Soundsystem and their flagbearers Daddy Ad and Earl Gateshead, replete with jump up MCs Superfour, Chucky Banton and Jah Buck. Their live MC/DJ laptop and live mash-up breaking out real movement on the dancefloor and turning up the heat considerably as they swathed their way through reggae bass classics old and new, showcasing the sounds of old, turned up, sped up and pumped up to shake the crowds of now, taking the sweet sounds of earlier into a whole new reggae realm.

The clubber contingent who stayed the full 10 hours of tonight’s marathon session were treated to a dubbed out, blissed out disco house session from club legend Rob Mello to draw a line under a fine day where hips were unhinged and Four Roses’ filled bourbon jam jars and jah combined in a perfect celebration of good times and sweet tastes.
