In its 20th year of existence the influence of ‘Loveless‘, My Bloody Valentine’s second and so far last album, has never been so apparent. From The Horrors and Glasvegas on one end of scale to tiny indie bands such as The 2.54s and Spotlight Kid on the other.

A new name to add to this list is the clad in black duo Carousels. With no material officially released yet and this only their second gig, these are tentative steps for the band. Lead singer Lucy Wilson coos sugar sweetly over Nick Benton’s passive/aggressive feedback drenched guitar twangs. Backed by post baggy backing tracks, their songs come across like Slowdive covering The Raveonettes after being dragged backwards through a mangle…good things.

Although they still have a while to go to get a strong set of songs behind them to play a full headline gig, in ‘Here To Me’ they have an ethereal indie gem similar in texture to My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Soon’, if they have another eleven songs like this hidden under their collective sleeve, they could easily be one of 2012’s hottest new acts.

Swedish four piece Battlekats have until recently played the anonymity card, only known as just a number and with no photographs of them and no available music, they managed to create a buzz by a sheer lack of information (see also Wu Lyf and the real Milli Vanilli). So to hear Battlekats beyond the anti-hype have an embarrassment of musical treats is a surprise.

What makes them stand out immediately are the crunching electro, techno and dub-step beats they use to base their songs around. Played by a blonde dreaded caveman-esque acid casualty, his beats one minute come across as subtle James Blake style post-dubstep, the next track will be Kompakt influenced German electro, he is in a world of his own sound as the rest of he band paint their own layer of lush indie sounds upon it.

The captivating lead singer is equal parts Robyn, Karin Andersson from The Knife and a post porridge era Goldilocks armed with an 80’s synth and high pitched wail that makes the soundclash behind her make perfect sense. Now, if they’d be so kind as to release some music, we’ll all be happy.
