Please recommend early 80s psychedelic/mutant disco weirdness
I'm looking for more stuff in the vein of Byrne/Eno's "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" or Arthur Russell's disco work. Quaint art-school post-disco stuff. Not necessarily postpunk though, there's loads of that stuff... Any ideas?

Disco Not Disco compilations
Disco Not Disco compilations are quite good for that. Also the Soul Jazz ESG / No Wave comps have some bangers on them, while the Liquid Liquid retrospective is pretty essential. Though those could well be on the 'post punk' side of the fence where you're concerned. Any help?
I love all that stuff.
I love all that stuff.
Currently reading Simon Reynolds' excellent post punk tome Rip It Up And Start Again which is essential and I can't believe I haven't got round to it before. That said, much as I love the post punk stuff, I'm also interested in "real" disco stuff, but particularly the more out-there experiments of Arthur Russell. I liken a lot of it to the minimal house stuff that's been coming out more recently. I also really like the mid-80s r'n'b/disco that's being played on the new Metro Area Fabric mix.

Yeah I love that book as well. Have you got the later Gang Of Four albums? Very disco orientated, with some cool tunes. Bit variable though!
No but I'll check them out.
No but I'll check them out. Really can't get enough of this stuff. I'm making a megamix of loads of '82 Funk, Riddim, Dub, Punk and Disco. It's looking good and I'll post it here when it's done.
Yeah there's so much stuff.
Yeah there's so much stuff. I recommend:
The Slits - Heard it Through the Grapevine (brilliant disco punk cover)
Common Sense - Voices inside my Head (another cover!)
Yoko Ono - Walking on Thin Ice (this is on one of the disco not disco comps i think)
Liquid Liquid - Cavern (as sampled by Grandmaster Melle Mel)
Material - Secret Life
Kano - I'm Ready
Doctor's Cat - Feel the Drive
Atmosfear - Dancing in Outer Space
Not all strictly 'punky' but definitely tracks you need in your life!
Arthur Russell was a
Arthur Russell was a Midwesterner, classically trained on the cello, who found his way to New York City and into the world of electronic, dance music. Oh, let's call a spade a spade, it was "Disco". This is music that we wouldn't even consider when it was in its prime in the 80s. Thankfully, our mind and our tastes have broadened a bit since then and we can now say, at least in the case of Arthur Russell, disco doesn't suck.
