Films of 2007

What have been yout favourite films of the year? And the worst? After literally seconds of contemplation, I'm going for the below:

Best

1. This is England - hardly an original choice, but I don't think anything else beat it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0jkv2bRFgQ

2. Tell No One - kinda like a flash French episode of Tales of the Unexpected.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf1_n-D8Idg

3. Reprise - pretty much amazing from start to finish.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf1_n-D8Idg

4. Jindabyne - nothing like a bit of tension in the Aussie outback. Anyone else think Gabriel Byrne looks exactly like Robbie Keane?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Krrq9hSQTQ

5. After The Wedding - just a great Scandinavian family drama.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi4vA3nvLtk

6. Hallam Foe - Jamie Bell gets stalky.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duZ4rj5-fpY

7. Eagle vs Shark - like Napolean Dynamite but better, with the dude from Flight of the Conchords.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xVMkqaOUS0

8. A Guide To Recognising Your Saints - intense tale of tough guys in the New York suburbs in the eighties.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZDXDvlpu6I

9. Once - it sounds like an awful idea, but it's great. And I despise musicals. Actually, the trailer makes it look a bit sickly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mIpwx5lA5I

10. Black Book - it's a bit far-fetched, but great fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mIpwx5lA5I

Near misses: My Kid Could Paint That, Eastern Promises, Sicko, The Darjeeling Limited, The Killing of John Lennon.

Worst

1. Evan Almighty - how could Steve Carell + plenty of animals = no jokes?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0hfd0rfQa0

2. The Number 23 - you get films that are generic, predictable and just out right lame, and then you have this awful, awful film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMp5rW56J8

3. Captivity - Elisa Cuthbert gets tortured. The end. Pointless.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6D5i9_1RkY

4. Next - redeeming features? None.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqIQk9pYbW4

5. Magicians - how could Peep Show cast + writers = few jokes? When Electric Six provide the funniest moment, you know you have problems.

6. The Wild Blue Yonder - Werner Herzog can make dull films too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Lh5mD_JJ4

7. Death Proof - Tarantino can make dull films too. This trailer is much better than the actual film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7irVhsxeF0

8. Vacancy - not awful, but so obvious and dated. I think I only agreed to see it because Kate Beckinsale was in it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQn68TqUCIk

9. I'm Not There- the performances are good, occasionally even great. But it doesn't work for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZGseissqX8

10. The Simpsons Movie - biggest disappointment of the entire year. Did enough not to make me angry at the time, but I'm kinda sad that I'll probably never watch it again. Spiderpig alone does not make a decent film.

After The Wedding - yaas. It

After The Wedding - yaas. It lasted a week in the cinema i worked in but i managed to watch the whole thing on shift. It was just a really solid film - great character study. I kinda thought it would have got a lot more attention cos of Mads Mikkelsen/James Bond but i guess it only works FOR James Bond....

La Vie En Rose - you'd have to have no soul to not like this film. Marion Cotillard's performance was so powerful.

Atonement - a really solid adaptation of an extremely difficult book. Yes, pace was a problem but...

Inland Empire - the surprise film at the GFF. 100 people walked out of it. yes, David Lynch is as good as ever :) friends with Donovan too...

Sunshine - aside from the fact we should all know by now that Danny Boyle cannot conclude his films - this was really good. And the pretty colours :)

Blades Of Glory - yeah, bring on the slagging. :)

As for worst - i think the forum would collapse if i ranted.....probably most of the films where auditoriums were covered in popcorn and condoms or the entire audience were thrown out i.e -
Scary Movie 10000
Stomp The Yard
Are We done Yet? - unfortunately not
Epic Movie - the satire equated too Nacho Libre eating, wait for it, a nacho! Uh, Nobel Prize to the writers, please!
The Simpsons - Homer gets beyond stupid, takes most of the audience with him
Death Proof - QT proves once again he's incapable of making a film NOT on the back of a gimmick

Suprises -
Stardust - i dont care i liked it!
The Hoax - weirdly, I enjoyed this.

Dissappointments -
Elizabeth The Golden Age - a great big meh to shekhar kapur who obviously decided to burn all his history books (and possibly historians)....
Fred Claus - i'm beginning to wonder if Vince Vaughn was ever actually funny. And Kevin Spacey, WTF?!?!

there's probably more.....

To be honest, I deliberately

To be honest, I deliberately avoided films that I thought would be bad this year. The only films that I saw in 2007 that were bad (that I can remember) were older films and not new releases (although I was disapointed with Atonement - overrated).

However, here's the films I rate this year, in order of beauteousness, starting from the best:

1. Lives of Others: Saw this early on the year. Best new release I've seen in ages, left me stunned and amazed. Also highly educational.

2. Science of Sleep: Another amazing film. My girlfriend recently bought me it on DVD, it was just as great a second time as when I saw it in the cinema. Don't have full access to my collection at the moment (comic, movie or music), but when I get back to Scotland I'm going to watch it many more times.

3. Control: Awesome biopic of Ian Curtis, as emotionally charged as Lives of Others, beautifully poetic and a great soundtrack. Wonderful.

4. Transformers: Hilarious. "ARE YOU USERNAME LADIESMAN217?!". Best line ever.

High Points-

WELL...
The Lives of Others was amazing, as pretty much everyone agreed upon.
I'm Not There was very enjoyable and not nearly as pretentious as might have been expected.
Zodiac was a solid return to form for David Fincher.
In the Shadow of the Moon (NASA doc) deserved a bigger audience - it's a great feel good movie.
Black Book and Days of Glory were two great, albeit very different, WWII movies.
This is England. I love Shane Meadows' films and this is his most complete work to date.

Disappointments -
The Simpsons Movie should have been made ages ago when the writing was better...
Death Proof was a horrid, horrid mess. Just wrong.
American Gangster wanted to be epic... turned out to be a bit boring.
Daft Punk's Electroma goes on forever...

Happy New Year, people!

Man, I forgot that Days of Glory was released in 2007. That could sneak in ahead of Black Book maybe? I also can't believe that I didn't realise that one of the actors had to use a pistol rather than a rifle because in reality he only has one arm!

Claire - I agree that Mads is pretty cool. It's always great to see people like him getting a break in huge mainstream films. Have you seen him in Green Butchers? Shorn of his hair, he looks really nerdy, it's quite amusing.

Oh, and I STILL haven't seen The Lives of Others.

That's alright, I didn't

That's alright, I didn't manage to get to the cinema once this past year!

The problem of having two small children - one of whom is very clingy - compounded with living in the middle of nowhere (45 minute drive to the nearest cinema, at least!) has put a stop to our cinema going for a while. Hopefully this coming year we'll be able to get out more, 'cos I really miss the whole cinema experience.

Last film I saw at the cinema was Star Wars - The Sith Debacle...

I only ever seem to watch movies on the plane now. Shit or what?

Ben - yup i have! Really

Ben - yup i have! Really rather funny film! The first i ever saw him was in this Danish detective/crime drama series "Rejseholdet." He's ridiculously huge in Scandinavia and my Swedish friend fancies the pants off him so we rented the entire series on DVD from the video store :)It's weird that now he's been in a big mainstream film i now recognise i've seen him in quite a few films - bit parts of course but...

Ben Hopkins

Is there anywhere that I can

Is there anywhere that I can catch a sample of this?

I know almost nothing about Danish TV, aside from The Kingdom.

best i can do is direct you

best i can do is direct you to youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBc8Pq3Ds2s

there's a coupla clips there (really short though) or you can watch lego versions of the series! :) i think it was only shown in Scandinavia, Germany and Austrailia so its kinda impossible to get here....Sorry! Its a pretty good show too.

Ben Hopkins

Cheers, that's my morning

Cheers, that's my morning sorted. Well, a few minutes of it...

James Masters

Control for me. The fact

Control for me.

The fact that it appears to be getting ignored in the mainstream awards race (Globes / Oscars) is probably more down to Miramax's piss poor promotional and marketing campaign in the US than the quality of the film.

Will be interesting to see what gets the nods in the Baftas. Safe but unchallenging working title product like The Golden Age and Atonement or the likes of This Is England (which was also very good) or Control.

Simon Harper

It only made 2007 by a week,

It only made 2007 by a week, but I'm Not There was for me the biggest disappointment of the year.

I was quite prepared for a confuse-a-thon, but the marathon viewing and total lack of narrative spoiled the movie that I had high hopes for.

OK so Cate Blanchett had the mannerisms down to a tee, and there were some great visual and musical moments (Jim James from My Morning Jacket at the funeral? Superb!), but as a whole it was pretentious and boring. I've never seen so many people walk out the theatre as I did watching this.

The soundtrack though is exemplary and songs from it are played at least once a day in the Clash office. The favourite WAS Charlotte Gainsbourg's 'Just Like A Woman', but after seeing the film, 'Goin' To Acapulco' by Jim James and Calexico tips it.
