RockNess
The discerning fan's Scottish choice...
Where and when? Dores on the banks of Loch Ness, Scotland - 12th-14th June.
Why should I go? Half the festival takes place in the Clash Arena, so you know it’s good.
Any interesting titbits of information? At last year’s festival, a couple were married in an inflatable church. They got engaged at the 2007 event.
The new boy on Britain’s festival circuit, RockNess has only been in existence since 2006, when it popped up to provide two days of hard-charging dance action on the banks of Loch Ness.
Since then the festival’s expanded to three days and has broadened its remit to include indie acts alongside four-to-the-floor DJs. This year, rock oddballs Super Furry Animals and The Flaming Lips will be rubbing shoulders with Basement Jaxx and The Prodigy, so you’ll have plenty to dance to no matter what your poison.
Having learned to their cost that the Byzantine car-park regulations of previous years are deeply unpopular, the organisers have made getting to the festival a doddle with shuttle buses from almost everywhere in Scotland. Once you’re on-site, the facilities should be pretty spiffy: RockNess has teamed up with the folk from Bestival to bring a bit of boutique partying way up north.
Of course, we can’t really bang on about RockNess without mentioning the outstanding scenery of the lake itself – not that you’ll see a vast amount of it while you cycle-dance to Erol Alkan, mind.
Oh, and make sure you pack a waterproof and your wellies as well as t-shirts and painkillers: the weather’s pretty changeable up there.
