Stream: Brown Brogues – Triflin’

Listen to their debut album now...

Manchester's DIY scene is buoyant.

With labels cutting back, a new breed of musician is going it alone. As a result, the city is a hive of collectives and promoters, bands and producers who are doing their own thing with a rare glee in their independence.

Brown Brogues are the perfect example. Little more than primal percussion, deranged guitar riffs and screaming vocals, the duo – Mark Vernon and Ben Mather to their mums – have taken their raucous noise across the nation.

New album 'Triflin' is another blast of feral, psychotic rock music. Clash is both excited and intimidated to be introducing the record to the watching world, so here's an introduction from Brown Brogues themselves:

Like the loud annoying neighbour returning after a late night out on the piss we are back with our new album Triflin', recorded once again with the Darwen based recording engineer irritant Eaglenose. Only this time we paid a little more money and he got out the good stuff, the big guns, the errr slightly better recording gear. This record was laid down on 16 track 1/2 inch tape through a beautiful old British made 'SECK' desk over 2 weekends and several late week nights, with the exception of a small group of curious 'alt' teenagers the recording went without a hitch.

Recorded live with a few elements of audio trickery and silly over the top overdubs using microphones set at 20 paces and screaming into the dank industrial space that is Graceland.

The title of the album is based on dialogue used by Omar Little in 'The Wire'. Specifically the court scene when he is in the witness box to to testify against Bird. I feel the urban dictionary definition expresses it best:

Triflin'
Consistantly lying. Always up to no good. Sneaky. Suspect. Whorish. Always scheming. Conniving.
(Should never be trusted)
Maarij Jathiyah is too triflin – he's steady off the tryin to be slick tip.

Most of the songs on this album are based on true to life horrific events. Enjoy.
