Not many bands would have the balls to book a gig at London’s beloved Garage without having an actual band ready to play, then again quartet Splashh haven’t had the most traditional of musical beginnings.
With founding members Toto and Sasha spending a summer at Toto’s folks’ place in Byron Bay, Australia, the two buddies whiled away the hours relaxing in the sun and jamming. Returning to the bleak skies of London come Christmas the duo found that those happy summer days had left a distinct mark on the material they were creating. “We started recording and in one week we got ‘Washed Up’, ‘Lemonade’ and ‘All I Wanna Do’,” Toto says. “It was so easy - we were just having the best time at home.”
Some serious blog interest once unleashed made the friends sit up and take notice. “After getting Thomas we booked a show on May the 2nd, put pressure on ourselves. We HAVE to get to that gig and play it. Four days before the show we called Jacob back home.”
“He asks if I wanna be the drummer,” Jacob picks up. “He tells me this on the Thursday, the gig is on the following Wednesday and I have my last gig with my band Saturday... I arrived in London and went straight to band practice.”
“We quote it’s the longest ever commute to band practice!” laughs Toto.
Truly born of the day of their first performance, Splashh have been happy in their own world building momentum with monthly single releases and D.I.Y gigs. Have they even had time to ponder the future? “We just started for a bit of fun and now it’s evolved,” Toto admits. “It’s good but scary and the pressure builds...but I like that! At the end of the day we’re having fun and I don’t care what others think, just these boys.”
